The dreaded tax season is upon us and I’m already hearing from some customers that it looks like this year’s payout is going to be BIG. NOW might be the right time to reduce the tax bill by purchasing qualifying equipment and software that you need and have been putting off.
Under the tax code section 179, businesses can deduct up to $510,000 for purchases of new and used equipment or “off-the-shelf” software. To take the deduction for 2017 the equipment must be purchased and put into service before January 1st, 2017.
The 2017 spending cap on equipment purchases is $2,030,000. After that amount, the deduction benefits are reduced on a dollar for dollar basis.
In addition to the new purchase deduction, there is also a Bonus Depreciation of up to 50% that can be taken in 2017. This applies to new equipment only.
Be sure to speak with your tax professional regarding your specific situation and qualifications.
