We have been flooded with frustrated computer users over the past couple of weeks because their computer’s were upgraded to Windows 10 without their permission.  At first we thought this had to be user error; maybe they clicked on the “Windows 10 nagware icon” and clicked OK by accident.  However, we quickly learned that Microsoft started treating Windows 10, just like any other Windows update about two weeks ago.  So if you have automatic updates enabled, which generally speaking we would recommend that you do, you could be upgraded to Windows 10 without your permission as well.

There are hundreds of posts already with customers complaining.  The real problem is that this is NOT an update, it is a totally new operating system.  And anytime you upgrade the operating system on existing hardware, you run the risk of having issues with drivers and hardware, that may or may not work.

One example that I read, was a medical professional that needed to run a test on a patient that was a critical healthcare issue, but he could not because his computer had been upgraded to Windows 10.  One of our customers had a DVR (digital video recorder) that recorded and controlled all of their security cameras that was upgraded without their permission.  They called us, not even realizing what had happened, but indicated that they couldn’t get the cameras to come up on the screen.  We’ll the DVR card (a hardware expansion card that all of the cameras connect to) was not compatible with Windows 10.  I thought to myself, what if this store had been robbed, or someone got hurt during the time the cameras were down?

Well rumor has it that Microsoft may have gotten the message, and at least for now, stopped the “automatic upgrade”, while still allowing, and almost tricking users into the “FREE upgrade”.  The good news is that if you have been upgraded to Windows 10 without your permission, or if you did it on purpose, but just don’t like it, you can roll back to Windows 7 within 30 days of your upgrade.  Here is how.

If your computer has been upgraded to Windows 10 within the last 30 days, just click on the start menu and then settings.  Click the “Update & Security” icon and select “Recovery”.  From there you should see a “Go Back to Windows 7”, or “Go back to Windows 8.1” option.  Click the “Get Started” button and follow the instructions to uninstall Windows 10.
